New Musical Horizons

Growing up in my house, our father encouraged music, my mother didn't.  My mother was, and is, a very Christian/spiritual woman who wanted us to avoid the "pitfalls" of rock-n-roll.  Being a wild woman in her youth, I suppose she wanted us to avoid her mistakes.

I had access to my father's extensive 2,000+ LP collection, but I found myself immune to most of the music due to my mother's influence.  I mean, Dad loved the greats!  The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles; the list goes on and on.

I was new to being 18 years old, and it was around September 1997 that I got my first taste of the real big Mac.  My brother purchased Fleetwood Mac's "The Dance" on CD after having seen clips of Silver Springs on MTV and VH1.

I had begun to teach myself to play guitar a year earlier, so watching Lindsey Buckingham was a revelation!  His effortless finger-picking technique blew me away, and inspired my own musicianship (which I had yet to discover) to new levels.  It was the first time that I recall having been extremely moved by a piece of music.  In one fell swoop this concert exorcised all the dogmatic walls placed around secular music from my childhood.

This song, and this album, remains one of my all-time favorites.  I hope you enjoy it too.  And just so you know, it's even better on DVD.

Dan Great story man. Your dad was awesome, I only met him once or twice, I just remember how kind he was. I remember going through my parents LP's too. That's where I discovered The Beatles, Cream, Billy Joel...
